Illustration of waves for the Oscillations and Waves course
Hokusai, The Great Wave

Physics [Oscillations and waves]

  1. Simple harmonic motion: the simple harmonic oscillator, damping, forced oscillations, complex impedance, and resonance.
  2. Coupled oscillators: normal modes, normal frequencies, normal coordinates, and systems with multiple degrees of freedom.
  3. Waves in one-dimensional continuous media: the wave equation, travelling and standing waves, reflection and transmission at discontinuities, dispersion, wave packets, phase and group velocity, surface waves in liquids, Fourier series and transforms, and bandwidth theorems.
  4. Waves in two dimensions: the two-dimensional wave equation, standing and travelling waves, degeneracy, reflection, transmission, and waveguiding.
  5. Waves in three dimensions: acoustic and electromagnetic waves, polarization, Fresnel coefficients, interference by division of wavefront and amplitude, and Fraunhofer diffraction. Suggested bibliography: Pain; Ingard; French.
